As a celebrity stylist, I am often very spoiled because I get to work with some of the most gorgeous women in the world and some of Hollywood’s most recognizable names. However, I came from humble beginning and always remind myself why I became a hairdresser: to beautify the world. We all deserve to have great hair and to feel beautiful.
A few years ago I had a woman walk in to my LA salon and ask for a short cut. She brought in a photo of Sharon Stone, who I have styled many times. I was in the midst of the busy awards season, much like I am right now, but I carved the time to give her a gorgeous short cut. She loved it so much she asked me style her hair for the Oscars the next day. I was already committed to styling two other people that day, but I agreed to squeeze her in to my schedule so she could look lovely for the big day, especially since we had just changed her hair so drastically.
That night I was lying in bed when the phone rang. It was late and I couldn’t imagine who was calling. That’s when my wife, Fabienne, told me that Johnny Depp was on the phone for me. I had never worked with Johnny and assumed it was one of my friends playing a prank on me. I picked up the phone and said, “What do you want, it’s late?” I may have even thrown in a four-letter word somewhere. The voice replied, “Hey man, I just want a hair cut.” I was horrified when I realized it really was Johnny Depp and immediately agreed to do his hair the next day. After his appointment, I had to quickly head over to my new client’s hotel to style her “Sharon Stone” coiffure. When I arrived she immediately asked me how her son looked. My jaw nearly dropped to the ground. As you probably guessed by now, that woman was Johnny’s mother. Because I had taken the time to accommodate her and gave her a cut she adored, she told him that I must cut his hair for the Oscars. The story ultimately proved to me that a little kindness goes a long way.
Styling a celebrity for the red carpet is very different from working Fashion Week or doing a photo shoot. It’s truly a collaboration between many people. The entire look has to flow and each piece of the ensemble must work together so the actor or actress looks perfect. We don’t want our client to end up on Joan River’s list the next day. From Debra Messing to Uma Thurman to Teri Hatcher to Tina Fey, I’ve seen and done it all. Typically I’m emailed a photo of the dress weeks prior to the awards show. From there, I send back a few different drawings or photos of how I picture the hair. On the big day, I usually head to the star’s hotel room, which is crowded with all walks of life.: Stylists, makeup artists, assistants, friends, family, etc.. I show up sans entourage with just a small bag of the products and tools I need for the day. I swoop in, do the hair and then hang in the corner for touch ups until the celebrity leaves in their limo to hit the carpet. Although the day is hectic, I pride myself in remaining calm and keeping a smile on my face. I’m there to build the confidence of the celebrity and make them beautiful.
I guess the moral of the story is what goes around, comes around. If you are kind to others, good things will come your way. In my case, they come with a Hollywood ending. So enjoy the awards shows this season and keep in mind all those individuals who are busy behind the scenes making others look good.
